Small Business Website Security & Performance
Why should I care?
The goal is to have a site that is safe for users and loads quickly and simply. Your visitors might coming to your site from their mobile devices on patchy wifi, so its important to keep your site lean and fast. Again, Google wants to serve up the best answers to a user’s question, so if your site is notoriously slow, or insecure, Google will not want to serve it.
How does it work?
Security. Your website should be safe to protect your users and your business. Your site should start with “https” rather than “http.” The “s” in “https” is for secure. It means all communications between your browser and the website are encrypted. Even if you arent worried about security, Google does. Google has stated publicly that they prefer to serve Https sites in Google search results, meaning an non-https site may be demoted in a Google search.
Performance is an umbrella term which includes:
- Site speed (how long does it take to load your site).
- Page size (how large / cumbersome are the pages on your site)
- Page requests (how many other sites or services is your page interacting with)
